A Comparative Study of Factors Affecting the Retirement Satisfaction of Semi Older and Older Adults

Abstract
In this study, the factors affecting the retirement satisfaction were compared by the age groups who were older than 65(older adults: 65~74) and younger than 65(semi older adults: 55~64). Also,the degree to how the retirement satisfaction was affected was compared. This study used the third wave of Korea Panel of Retirement and Income Study. The sample size of this study was 396 for semi older adults and 912 for older adults (65+). For testing factors affecting the retirement satisfaction, hierarchical multiple regressions were used. As a theoretical framework, the Stress Process Model of Adaptation was used. As independent variables for affecting the retirement satisfaction, types and causes of retirement, and pros and cons of retirement were used. Also, for adjustment variables, spouse and children`s work status, semi and young older adults` economic status and leisure activities were used. According to research findings, for semi older group,children`s employment was an important factor affecting the retirement satisfaction. However, for older adults group, public pension, leisure activity and the economic hardship of retirement were main factors affecting the retirement satisfaction. For both groups, the satisfaction of leisure was the most important factor affecting the retirement satisfaction. Also, the economic hardship was the second most negative factor of affecting the retirement satisfaction for both groups. The economic independence and psychosocial preparation such as involving in leisure activities helped the adjustment after retirement.
